Keeping white clothing white

May 31st, 2008 · No Comments · General

It’s the time of year now (summer) when there are sweat stains to be concerned with. If you pretreat the stained clothing by rubbing the area with plain white bar soap then wash the clothing in the hottest water that’s safe for the garment, you should see the stains go. You can also use one of the enzyme detergents that are on the market. Read labels in both the clothing and on the box or bottle of detergent. If you have a dry clean only item, follow the directions to get a stain out or see your local dry cleaner.

White socks are always a problem to keep white. Try soaking the socks in a solution of 1/2 cup dishwasher detergent, 1/2 cup chlorine bleach, and 1 gallon of hot water. Mix well. Soak socks for 20 minutes. If you feel they need more time to soak, do it again for 20 minutes. Then launder as usual.

For ring around the collar, put some shampoo on the collar and rub it in with an old toothbrush (soft bristle preferred). Or you can rub in baking soda or white chalk to absorb body oils. Wash as usual.
