Getting enough sleep at night is a must for diabetics. Yet, if you are overweight and snore at night, there’s a risk for sleep apnea which temporarily stops a person from breathing. When no air comes in the brain automatically wakes you making you choke and gasping for air. This action can stress the heart and increase your blood pressure. You may fall asleep immediately, only to have the throat tissues collapse and the apnea begins again. This may happen hundreds of time during one sleep cycle and you may not even realize this is happening. Very hazardous to your health, sleep apnea is more common among people who have high blood pressure, large tonsils or nasal congestion, or people who are overweight. It has been estimated that 18 million Americans have sleep apnea . Poor sleep results in daytime drowsiness and increased risk of blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. If you suspect you may have sleep apnea you need to discuss this with your doctor. A sleep test will be done to determine if you have this disease.
