Sciatica, a nasty pain

July 29th, 2009 · No Comments · Health

Last Friday I began to have more pain in my lower back. I want to let you know that I sit all day at a computer station since my job is customer service. While I do have a rather comfortable office chair, sitting was beginning to really bother me Friday. By Saturday morning I hurt more, only now I felt the pain in my buttocks. By Sunday I was having more pain. My mother said she would have pain like that now and then which her doctor said was sciatic. She just took ibuprofen at the time and didn’t move around a lot so the pain would go away. Fortunately, by Monday when I got to work, my boss told me to make an appointment with my chiropractor. She also agreed the pain was more than likely sciatic.

Going to the chiropractor I could barely walk right. The pain was fierce on the right side of my butt. When the chiropractor began working on the area I cried out. It hurt even worse. Very painful to me, tender spots where the muscles had tightened. He suggested ice packs to be placed on the area where the tenderness was. I did that when I came home and it did help along with taking an Aleve tablet.

I always have to know more so I did some research on sciatic. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body. When stress is caused by either the vertebral column or the muscles holding the nerve in the buttock region it can cause severe pain in the buttock region. Standing or sitting only causes unbearable pain. Proper rest and exercise can make it go away. The sciatic nerve passes through the buttock area and down the leg towards the feet causing cramping sensations in the thigh area. Muscles get inflated and may cause a burning feeling in the thigh. It can stay for weeks before it finally goes away. My chiropractor described it as a “charlie horse” in the butt. This nerve can get inflamed making walking or sitting the most painful for the patient.

While I am not in as much pain as I was on Monday, the pain is still there if I sit for long periods of time.  I continue to use the ice packs and Aleve. This seems to help. If you experience such pain consult a chiropractor. You won’t be wasting time or money as mine really did help me.
