Nobel Peace Prize goes to Obama?

October 9th, 2009 · 3 Comments · My Opinion

What the hell were they thinking, the board of 5? Did they leave their brains in the dryer too long? What did Obama do that earned him this reward? Why are people wondering the same thing as me?

I don’t feel Obama has been in office long enough to have earned even a nomination, let alone win the prize. He was nominated in the beginning of his presidency. How can it be? What has he really done so far? The answer is nothing but talk. He has promised many things, but he hasn’t quite delivered yet. Why did the board even think he was a nominee? Oh, sure, he promised to end the war in Iraq and Iran, but that hasn’t been done yet. He has promised to open lines of communication among world leaders. I don’t see him getting very far with that. So his winning the Nobel Prize is based on talk, talk, and more talk. I always thought the Prize was given for actions, not pretty speeches. Was I wrong?

I open my comment section to anyone who wants to comment on this. Please keep the language PG13. I know by the reactions of many, including the press who attended the announcement that HUH? became a common word to say when hearing this news. I thought it was a joke when announced on my favorite TV news program. But there it was and perhaps the joke is one the board of 5 who picked Obama. Time will tell.

In reading a report from the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper today I learned many are wondering why Obama got this prize. Fawzi Barhourm, a spokesman for Hamas stated “Nothing has changed in the Obama administration’s policies from previous U.S. governments except statements, promises, and hopes”.
Efraim Inbar is a politics professor at Bar-Ilan University ner Tel Aviv. He felt the prize showed that “the Nobel judges were unable to distinguish between words and deeds.”

What bothered me the most was that Obama had to be nominated no more than 11 days into office. Who nominated him is yet to be known.

The sad thing about Obama getting the Peace Prize is how that cheapens the prize.
Obama is no where near the deserving stature of the previous winners.
This is just a partial list of the winners.

Obama couldn’t qualify to shine their shoes…..

MARTTI AHTISAARI for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts.

MOHAMED ELBARADEI for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way.

Even JIMMY CARTER JR., former President of the United States of America, is 10x more deserving than Obama.

KIM DAE JUNG for his work for democracy and human rights in South Korea and in East Asia in general, and for peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular.

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS (MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES), Brussels, Belgium.

JOHN HUME and DAVID TRIMBLE for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland.

& JODY WILLIAMS for their work for the banning and clearing of anti-personnel mines.

MIKHAIL SERGEYEVICH GORBACHEV , President of the USSR, helped to bring the Cold War to an end.

DESMOND MPILO TUTU , South Africa, Bishop of Johannesburg, former Secretary General South African Council of Churches (S.A.C.C.). for his work against apartheid.

MOTHER TERESA , India, Leader of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity.

ANDREI DMITRIEVICH SAKHAROV , Soviet nuclear physicist. Campaigner for human rights.

HENRY A. KISSINGER , Secretary of State, State Department, Washington.

UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN’S FUND (UNICEF) New York, founded by U.N. in 1946. An international aid organization.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. , leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, campaigner for civil rights.

ALBERT JOHN LUTULI , President of the South Africal liberation movement, the African National Congress.

CORDELL HULL Former Secretary of State. One of the initiators of the United Nations.

for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development

I agree with Anon 100%. I don’t believe for 1 minute that Obama has done anything outstanding so far. To have someone nominate him so early in his presidency and then to have him win is to degrade the others who have won before. If I had been one of the former recipients Obama would have gotten a letter from me telling him how I felt about his winning. And I would have also sent a letter to the board of 5 expressing my deep concerns about their ability to chose a decent winner. I hope they are ashamed of what they have done.
