First you will need to make sure the container you have chosen is large enough for the plants you want to place in the container. The larger the container the more soil and moisture it will hold, so you will have less watering and fertilizing to do. The container also will need decent drainage holes. There are various kinds of containers: porous like clay pots, plastic which holds moisture longer, fiberglass, concrete, wood, and metal.
Choose a good potting mix. You can combine equal amounts of peat moss or compost with topsoil. adjust the mix to find what works best for you. Then pick the perfect plants. Be adventurous and plant different kinds in one pot, using spikes as the background. Look at some that are already on sale at stores and try to create your own.
Watering should be done when the soil is a bit dry. Just don’t over-water your containers. The plants will rot and die on you. Make sure to moisten the soil enough until the excess water runs out the bottom. If it’s very hot and humid outside, you might need to water more often.
