Most people are aware of breast cancer, but ovarian cancer, just as devastating to any woman, isn’t talked about all that much. It is one of the 5 cancers that cause death in women each year. There are some symptoms to look for: bloating, pelvic pain, higher urinary frequency - all at once. So, if you are over 55, have a family history of breast, colon or ovarian cancer, you need to keep this cancer in mind. You may be more susceptible to the disease. Pap tests screen for cervical, not ovarian cancers. If you have symptoms you will need to have a CA-125 blood test and an ultrasound. If you are currently taking or have taken birth control pills in the past you are less likely to develop ovarian cancer. Ask your gynecologist at your next visit about ovarian cancer. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
