Osteoporosis- bone health

February 20th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Health

I learned some interesting things about bone health. I have the beginnings of osteoporosis. This doesn’t mean I am going to break bones in the near future. It means I have to be careful and eat more of the right foods and get more calcium in my system. I will need to exercise more, lose weight gradually, and curb alcohol and tobacco consumption. There are some warning signs for osteoporosis. These include being an inch shorter than you used to be, being very thin or having a history of anorexia, getting little sun and not eat foods containing vitamin D. Dairy products will give the needed vitamin D as will other foods. You do not need to rely just on dairy products for vitamin D. The following foods will produce vitamin D in your system: turnip greens, rhubarb, soybeans, wheat bread and bok choy.

Taking a calcium tablet doesn’t necessarily improve bone health. While calcium is essential women need less calcium and more vitamin D unless they are exposed to the sun more. Excess calcium (2500 mg or more per day) can mess up bone repair because it prevents absorption of some nutrients needed. Other foods that will help are kale, broccoli, spinach, oranges, tofu, almonds, and sardines. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables will help you get all the nutrients your body needs.

When in doubt have a bone density test done by your doctor. This measure the bone in different areas of your body. A blood test can estimate bone status because it measures the level of blood calcium. Your body is very complex and you need to have a lot of different nutrients entering. If you do have osteoporosis your doctor can help you plan a strategy which might be medications to slow down bone loss.

Keep exercising and follow the doctor’s directives. You don’t want to be a bent over old person like your grandparents might have been. I remember my grandmother shrinking as she got older. Now it’s my turn. I am not ready to be under 5 feet tall, so I do need to do something now to help myself. If you have any worries about this condition, please consult your doctor. Don’t wait.
