Losing weight…the old diet thing

January 29th, 2008 · No Comments · Health

First of all if you intend to diet on your own, DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST! There’s a reason it’s called breakfast because it means “breaking the fast”. In other words, eating after a long period of time when you haven’t eaten. Breakfast is essential for a good diet. I don’t mean a grab and go cup of coffee or tea. I mean a real breakfast you have to chew…and donuts aren’t the right thing! You should eat a good breakfast every day. Include protein, carbohydrates and some fat to give you energy and keep you alert for the next few hours. Cereals are good for breakfast because you can find one that contains all the things you need to get yourself started in the morning.

There is no reason to starve yourself to lose weight. That doesn’t always work. Just eat more low calorie foods and keep away from the junk food and too many carbs. Soup is filling and low in calories. Vegetables, either raw or cooked, are great, too. Just don’t drown them with butter or margarine. As for salads, start with lots of lettuce, then add more veggies and some whole grains. Go lightly on the dressing.

Energy bars are not a solution. They are too small to give you a good amount of what you need to fill up. In other words, eat one and you’ll get hungry too fast. It doesn’t give you the energy that you had hoped for, either. Try a banana or eat something good! Energy bars are good for emergencies, like when you can’t get anywhere to get a decent meal. Just watch the calorie count on each bar. Some have pretty high numbers of calories.

You need some fat in your diet. There are good kinds and bad kinds. The good ones to look for are the ones you get from eating oily fish because they help suppress inflammation in your body, reducing the risk for cancer and heart disease. Monounsaturated fat also helps. This can be found in nuts and olive oil. JustĀ  eat these fats in moderation. They still contain a lot of calories.

Consult your doctor about a good diet plan. That’s step #1. Then keep at it until the pounds start to go away. You will need to continue exercising while dieting, too. And good luck to you!
