Helping prepare for Medical Emergencies

February 17th, 2008 · No Comments · Health

You really need to read this one carefully as there are some things you should have with you all the time. You never know when a medical emergency will happen and you should be prepared.

Keep your medical documents together. You should have: your personal identification, health insurance information, a brief medical history of each family member, a list of each family member’s medication being currently taken on a consistent basis, a consent form (if you are seeking care for a minor who isn’t your child, such as one you are babysitting), your physician’s name (along with address and phone number), a copy of any advance directives concerning the type of care your want should you or your family member become incapacitated.

Now we all know you won’t carry this information with you at all times. But you should let someone in your family know if you want to have drastic measures taken to prolong life. You should carry  id, medical cards, and the name of your doctor along with a phone number to reach him/her. Keep a list of your regularly taken medications with you and update that list as needed. You should include the dosage and when you are to take each medication and the name of the physician who prescribed the medication.

This way if you are unconscious someone can check your wallet for the information needed when you are in the E.R. or doctor for treatment. It’s especially important for diabetics to note if they take insulin or a pill to regulate their blood sugar levels. This could prevent the wrong medication being given in case of an emergency when you can’t talk or tell someone what you are taking for diabetes. This is also important for someone who has previously had a heart attack.
