I learned a very valuable lesson yesterday, one that still has me steaming! I used a debit card to purchase $15 worth of gas at a Shell station. What I didn’t know was they would “freeze” $90 on my checking account! I didn’t have that much in my account, so now I have a $35 overdraft fee to pay. I am not a happy camper at all! I am trying to get my bank to delete that fee as I feel this is an unfair practice pulled by the gas station. I have since learned this happens a lot. If you use a credit card they will “freeze” $1. Yes, that’s right, ONE DOLLAR. So why the huge freeze for a debit card that would pay out quickly? I have no clue.
I did learn by going onto the Internet that I am not the only person this has happened to. If you want to read more just Goggle debit card + gas and you will find the information. I intend to go back to that Shell station and complain. I don’t know if it will do me any good, but I would certainly feel better getting it off my chest. If enough people complain maybe the gas stations will stop this practice. I feel it is not only unfair but should be illegal. Pass this on to all your family and friends. Let them know this could happen to them. I was lucky enough not to have more than $35 deducted. Some people ended up bouncing a lot of checks and incurred high overdraft fees. Be careful since there are too many companies out there trying to rip off the people who can’t afford to have this happen. With gas prices as high as they are right now, it seems to just be another way to aggravate the situation.
