Hammertoes are formed when toes “buckle” and bend upwards slightly. This can be a problem when shopping for shoes. You need to make sure you don’t buy shoes that will rub this area and make a sore on the toe. Diabetics have to be very careful about sores on their feet. Corns, skin inflammation and inability to wear shoes comfortably can make your life miserable. Personally I have found a shoe with a rounded front more comfortable than pointy toed shoes. People with diabetic neuropathy are more susceptible to hammertoes.
Overlapping toes can be from birth or formed over time. These toes actually overlap another toe, causing many problems in buying shoes and can cause further pain, inflammation and corns. Too much pressure again the skin can form thick, hardened skin or corns. Soft corns exist between the toes. They are the result of two bones rubbing against each other, pinching your skin. You should consult a foot doctor if you develop any corns as they can become quite a problem for you, especially being diabetic.
Diabetics should see a foot doctor at least once a year. It’s very important to make sure you still have feeling in your feet, no corns, hammertoe problems, or foot ulcers or sores. If you are not sure about a good foot doctor in your area ask your diabetes doctor or family doctor for a referral.
