This past year we lost some wonderful people who made us laugh, cry, scared us, and motivated us. Paul Newman was one star who passed away with a legacy left behind with his Newman’s Own line of products that funds his camp for children who need help The Hole in the Wall Camp. Newman will always be remembered for those wonderful blue eyes of his and his movies, one of which was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Charlton Heston who was not only in some of the biggest movies (Ben Hur, Planet of the Apes), but was also involved with the National Rifle Association. Heath Ledger who died too young and much too soon. He left us with one film he never saw -The Black Knight. Roy Scheider (Jaws), Estelle Getty (Mama in the Golden Girls), Suzanne Pleshette (played the wife in the Bob Newhart Show) and Don S. Davis (Gen. Hammond in Stargate SG1). Authors Michael Crichton (Jurrasic Park) and Arthur C. Clarke (2001: A Space Odyessy) who made us think about their stories, sometimes frightening us with their future thoughts.
Comedians Bernie Mac, Dick Martin of Laugh In, George Carlin (7 words you can never say on TV), and Harvey Korman (of the Carol Burnett Show) are now gone. Jim McKay, spokesperson for the Wide World of Sports and some of the Olympic games is gone. Larry Harmon who was Bozo the Clown. Alexander Courage who composed the theme of Star Trek. Issac Hayes who sang the theme to Shaft.
Yes, we lost some wonderful people in the entertainment business, but we have them still on tape, on recordings, in books. That is their legacy. They will always be with us.
