A very good friend of mine had the misfortune to write a check for 45 cents which she owed as the balance of her account. When the company cashed her check they cashed it for 45 dollars! This resulted in quite a mess for her with her own checking account. She had to call her bank to have this disaster taken care of. She was very frustrated and told me she had closed the account for which she had written the check. After all this she learned the company would have written off the 45 cents she had owed. She could have avoided a lot of hassles had she just refused to pay the 45 cents. After all, it cost her a lot more than the stamp, the envelope, and the check. She said she almost had a panic attack when she saw her checking account statement online since the bank ended up charging her an overdraft fee all due to this check. Fortunately she was able to have the bank reverse the overdraft fee.
When you come upon such an occurrence please call the company in question and ask them how to proceed. She could have just told them she wasn’t sending a check for that amount. Most companies will write off any amount under a dollar. It’s best to check with the company before you go ahead and create a problem for yourself.
