First things first…get an eye exam. Once that has been done, then you can begin to look at all the frames that might work for you. Did you know it’s better to pick the lenses first, then the frames? That way the lenses will fit into the frames better. Strong prescriptions can be made into thinner, flatter ones now. These lenses are called mid-index, high-index, and polycarbonate. If you are very active in sports you will need a strong, durable lens. Talk to the eye doctor about this.
You might need a pair of reading glasses if you have trouble seeing up close. These are inexpensive and can be bought in just about any drug store or larger department store like Wal-Marts or Target. I’ve even seen them in the dollar stores.
If you sit in front of a computer all day you might get some eye strain and tiredness. There are lenses created just for this type of activity. If driving a car at night bothers you with those annoying oncoming headlights, there are anti-reflective lenses that work beautifully to help. Then, too, there are the lenses that will help protect your eyes from the sun. This is applied with a coating onto the lenses. Photocromic lenses darken when you’re outside then clear again when you come inside. Please remember that some medications can also make your eyes sensitive to sunlight or bright lights. Again, speak to your doctor.
Ready to choose those frames? Rectangular frames work well for round faces, round frames for a more square face. The frame should also be on scale for the size of your face. You need to pick a color that will compliment your skin tone and hair color, too. And pay attention to the frame materials because there are many varieties: lightweight, flexible, strong, and hypoallergenic. When in doubt ask the eye care specialist who can help you. Better yet, make sure to take along a friend or relative you trust to give you a good opinion on the frames. This is especially important when you are very near or far sighted and can’t see how good you look in the nearest mirror without your glasses on! I never go without someone along because I am afraid I will end up with the ugliest looking glasses in the world! It doesn’t matter if the frames are on the cheaper side or the more expensive ones, it’s what looks good on you that counts!
