Birdhouses

I have learned most birds are protected. In other words, you can’t get rid of them unless they are a pest bird (starlings, pigeons). Some people want the birds to just go away. They don’t seem to like having birds nesting on their homes. I do understand that some birds make their nests in rather awkward places, like right outside the front door overhang, in gutters, behind shutters. If there are eggs in these nests, please don’t knock them down. If there are no eggs, then go ahead and knock down the nests. Just be very careful because the birds will come after you if they see you knocking their home down.

You can also take the following action: wait until the eggs are hatched and the baby birds leave the nest. Then you can remove the nest. Placing bird houses in areas where you would appreciate the birds nest would be a better idea. You can either make or buy ready made birdhouses. Depending on what type of bird you want to attract to your yard, the size of a birdhouse will vary. Check the labels on the birdhouses at the local hardware store for this information. Just remember to place the bird house in a good area to attract these birds. Earthtone wood houses are best. Locate the birdhouses at least 5 to 6 feet from the ground. House wrens like their houses hanging from a tree. Chickadees prefer birdhouses 4 to 8 feet above the floor of a thicket. Then sit back and wait for the birds to find the houses and make their nests. Don’t get angry is the birdhouse isn’t used this year, as it might be used next year. Birds can be rather picky.
